CENTURY AND MILLENNIUM GUIDE
Roman Numerals for Centuries and Millennia
To write a century in Roman numerals, convert the number of the century, not the complete year.
For example:
2026 as a year:
MMXXVI
21st century:
XXI
3rd millennium:
IIIThese are three different values.
MMXXVI identifies the individual year 2026. XXI represents the twenty-first century, and III represents the third millennium.
Understanding that distinction prevents most mistakes involving centuries and millennia.
Key takeaways
- Convert the century or millennium number, not the complete year.
- The 21st century is XXI.
- The 3rd millennium is III.
- The first century covered years 1–100.
- The twentieth century covered 1901–2000.
- The twenty-first century began in 2001.
- Years ending in
00complete a century rather than begin the next one. - Conventional historical chronology has no year zero.
- Ordinary English normally uses forms such as 21st century, even when the corresponding Roman numeral is XXI.
Year, century and millennium are different values
A complete year and the period containing it are not converted in the same way.
1066 as a year:
MLXVI
11th century:
XI
2nd millennium:
IIThe Roman numeral XI does not identify the year 1066. It identifies the ordinal period called the eleventh century.
The same principle applies to 2026:
MMXXVI = the year 2026
XXI = the century containing it
III = the millennium containing itHow century numbering works
A century contains 100 years.
Because conventional historical chronology begins with year 1 rather than year 0, the first century covered years 1–100. The second century covered 101–200.
The pattern continues:
| Century | Year range | Roman numeral |
|---|---|---|
| 1st century | 1–100 | I |
| 2nd century | 101–200 | II |
| 10th century | 901–1000 | X |
| 18th century | 1701–1800 | XVIII |
| 19th century | 1801–1900 | XIX |
| 20th century | 1901–2000 | XX |
| 21st century | 2001–2100 | XXI |
This is why 2026 belongs to the twenty-first century rather than the twentieth. Twenty complete centuries had ended by the close of 2000, and the next century began in 2001.
Why years ending in 00 are special
For most years, the century number is one higher than the opening part of the year:
1750 → 18th century
1901 → 20th century
2026 → 21st centuryYears ending in 00 are different because they complete the existing century:
1800 → 18th century
1900 → 19th century
2000 → 20th century
2100 → 21st centuryThe following year begins the next century:
1801 → 19th century
1901 → 20th century
2001 → 21st century
2101 → 22nd centuryA reliable rule is:
A year ending in
00belongs to the century it completes. The next century begins in the following year.
Exact calculation method
For any Common Era year:
- Subtract 1 from the year.
- Divide the result by 100.
- Ignore any remainder.
- Add 1.
For 2026:
2026 − 1 = 2025
2025 ÷ 100 = 20 remainder 25
20 + 1 = 21Therefore:
2026 belongs to the 21st century
21 = XXIFor 2000:
2000 − 1 = 1999
1999 ÷ 100 = 19 remainder 99
19 + 1 = 20Therefore, 2000 belongs to the twentieth century, represented by XX.
The compact formula is:
century = floor((year − 1) ÷ 100) + 1The worked method is usually easier to apply.
Common century labels
| Century | Roman numeral | Century | Roman numeral |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | I | 11th | XI |
| 5th | V | 12th | XII |
| 10th | X | 15th | XV |
| 18th | XVIII | 20th | XX |
| 19th | XIX | 21st | XXI |
| 22nd | XXII | 25th | XXV |
These numerals represent century numbers, not complete years within those centuries.
How millennium numbering works
A millennium contains 1,000 years.
The same boundary rule applies:
| Millennium | Year range | Roman numeral |
|---|---|---|
| 1st millennium | 1–1000 | I |
| 2nd millennium | 1001–2000 | II |
| 3rd millennium | 2001–3000 | III |
| 4th millennium | 3001–4000 | IV |
The year 2000 belonged to the second millennium. The third millennium began on January 1, 2001.
Although the arrival of the year 2000 was widely celebrated as a new millennium, conventional chronological numbering places the formal boundary one year later.
2000 → 2nd millennium → II
2001 → 3rd millennium → III
2026 → 3rd millennium → III
3000 → 3rd millennium → III
3001 → 4th millennium → IVThe exact calculation follows the same principle:
millennium = floor((year − 1) ÷ 1000) + 1The 1900s and the twentieth century are not identical
The expressions the 1900s and the twentieth century are often treated as though they describe exactly the same period.
Strictly speaking, they do not.
The 1900s:
1900–1999
The 20th century:
1901–2000They overlap for 99 years, but their first and final years differ.
The same applies to:
The 2000s:
usually 2000–2099
The 21st century:
2001–2100Depending on context, “the 2000s” can also mean only the decade from 2000 to 2009.
Century numbers, decades and hundreds-based year groups should not be treated as interchangeable.
Centuries before the Common Era
Century groupings can also be applied to BCE years, but the year numbers run backwards towards 1 BCE.
1st century BCE:
100 BCE–1 BCE
2nd century BCE:
200 BCE–101 BCE
3rd century BCE:
300 BCE–201 BCEExamples:
44 BCE → 1st century BCE → I
150 BCE → 2nd century BCE → II
250 BCE → 3rd century BCE → IIIThe order may appear reversed because larger BCE year numbers are further back in time.
Conventional historical chronology moves directly from 1 BCE to 1 CE. There is no year zero between them.
Some astronomical systems use a year zero for calculation, but that is a separate technical convention.
How centuries are written in English
Ordinary English prose normally uses Arabic ordinal numbers:
21st century
20th century
5th century BCERoman numerals are useful when the numeral itself is being demonstrated:
21st century = XXI
20th century = XX
5th century = VFor clear English-language writing, the preferred presentation is:
Normal prose:
the 21st century
Roman numeral reference:
XXIThis keeps the writing natural while still giving the correct conversion.
International style differences
Roman numeral century labels are more common in some other languages.
Spanish commonly places a Roman numeral after the word for century:
siglo XXIFrench may use a Roman numeral with an ordinal marker:
XXIe siècleA styled publication may display the final e as a superscript. The plain-text form above remains understandable where specialist typography is unavailable.
English normally prefers:
21st centuryThese forms identify the same period but follow different language conventions.
Avoid hybrid forms
Do not attach an English ordinal suffix directly to a Roman numeral:
XXIst century
IIIrd millenniumThese forms mix Roman numerals with suffixes designed for Arabic numbers.
Use:
21st century
3rd millenniumWhere a Roman numeral label is deliberately required, use wording such as:
Century XXI
Millennium IIIThe surrounding text should make the meaning clear.
Is this how ancient Romans described centuries?
Not usually in the modern historical sense.
Expressions such as the twenty-first century and the third millennium are modern chronological groupings.
Ancient Romans identified years in other ways, including by naming the consuls holding office. Individual calendar dates could be expressed through the Kalends, Nones and Ides.
Using XXI for the twenty-first century is therefore a modern application of Roman numeral notation, not evidence that ancient Romans organised history through today’s century system.
Common mistakes
Converting the complete year
2026 as a year = MMXXVI
21st century = XXIStarting the twenty-first century in 2000
The year 2000 completed the twentieth century. The twenty-first began in 2001.
Starting the third millennium in 2000
The second millennium covered 1001–2000. The third began in 2001.
Confusing the 1900s with the twentieth century
The 1900s cover 1900–1999. The twentieth century covers 1901–2000.
Adding an English suffix to a Roman numeral
Avoid XXIst. Write 21st century in English prose or use XXI as the Roman numeral label.

What is the 21st century in Roman numerals?
The twenty-first century is XXI.
What century is 2026 in?
The year 2026 belongs to the twenty-first century, represented by XXI.
Is 2000 in the twentieth or twenty-first century?
The year 2000 belongs to the twentieth century. The twenty-first century began in 2001.
What millennium is 2026 in?
The year 2026 belongs to the third millennium, represented by III.
Why is there no year zero?
Conventional BCE and CE historical chronology moves directly from 1 BCE to 1 CE. Year zero is used in some astronomical systems but not in ordinary historical century numbering.
Is the twentieth century the same as the 1900s?
No. The twentieth century covers 1901–2000, while the 1900s usually cover 1900–1999.
Should I write XXIst century?
No. In English, write 21st century. Use XXI when presenting the century number specifically as a Roman numeral.
Did ancient Romans use modern century labels?
Not in the way historians do today. Modern century and millennium labels are later chronological groupings that can be represented with Roman numerals.
