How Roman Fractions Worked: The Duodecimal System
Romans did use fractions, but not in the same way that we write decimals today.
Many everyday Roman fractions were organised around twelfths. One twelfth was called an uncia. One half could be called a semissis, while the related term semis is especially familiar from Roman coinage, where it represented half an as.
This may sound unfamiliar, but the basic idea is practical. Twelve divides evenly into halves, thirds, quarters and sixths, which helps explain why twelfths were useful in money, weights, measurements and calculations.

Why divide a whole into twelve parts?
Twelve is easy to divide in several useful ways:
12 ÷ 2 = 6
12 ÷ 3 = 4
12 ÷ 4 = 3
12 ÷ 6 = 2That means one whole can be divided neatly into:

In the notation preserved with Frontinus’s text, a dot could represent one uncia. More dots could show additional twelfths.
For example:
one dot = 1/12
three dots = 3/12 = 1/4
five dots = 5/12The exact layout of the marks could vary, so a modern fraction should always be shown alongside any historical sign.
The semissis and semis: one half
One half could be called a semissis in fractional notation:
6/12 = 1/2In the notation preserved with Frontinus’s text, an S-shaped sign represented this half value.
The related term semis is especially familiar from Roman coinage, where it represented half an as.
The distinction is useful:
- semissis appears in the fractional naming system;
- semis is strongly associated with the half-unit coin and related monetary use.
Both refer to the idea of one half, but they appear in different historical contexts.

Each of the principal twelfths had a name:

These names are useful when reading historical material, but they do not need to be memorised to understand the system.
The easiest terms to remember are uncia for one twelfth and semissis for one half.
Worked example: seven twelfths
Suppose a value is seven twelfths of a whole.
Begin with one half:
semissis = 6/12Then add one uncia:
uncia = 1/12Together:
6/12 + 1/12 = 7/12The Latin name for seven twelfths was septunx.
In the notation preserved with Frontinus’s text, the half sign and an additional twelfth mark could be combined to show this value.
The useful lesson is simple: a less familiar fraction could be built from known parts.
Where were Roman fractions used?
Roman fractions were practical tools.
Money and weights
The as could be treated as a complete unit divided into twelve unciae. A semis represented half an as, while an uncia represented one twelfth.
The same language also applied to weight because an uncia was a twelfth part of the Roman pound.
Measurements and engineering
Frontinus used named fractions and fractional signs when discussing pipes, water capacity and measurements in Rome’s aqueduct system.
His text includes fractions from one twelfth to eleven twelfths, as well as smaller units used when greater precision was needed.
Accounts and administration
Roman administrative records also preserve fractional calculations. The Tabula Alimentaria of Veleia contains consistent fractional relationships in property values and loans.
These examples show that Roman fractions supported real financial, administrative and engineering work.
Could Roman fractions be smaller than one twelfth?
Yes.
The uncia was the main twelfth, but smaller subdivisions were also used. Examples include:
semuncia = 1/24
sextula = 1/72
scripulus = 1/288These smaller units show that Roman technical measurement could become much more precise than the basic twelfths table suggests.
The full hierarchy included additional names, but three examples are enough to show the principle.
How did Romans perform the calculations?
Written Roman numerals recorded values, but the calculation itself could also be supported by counters, counting boards or an abacus.
The written answer and the method used to reach it were not necessarily the same thing.

Roman fractions were not decimals
A Roman fraction based on twelfths is not the same as a modern decimal fraction.
For example:

Roman fractions were therefore a genuine historical system, not decimal numbers written with Roman letters.
