Can Roman Numerals Represent Zero, Negative Numbers and Decimals?
Standard Roman numerals are designed for positive whole numbers. They do not use a normal symbol for zero, and negative values or decimal fractions need an extra sign or a different system.
That does not mean Roman numerals cannot show numbers containing zero digits. For example:
2,006 = MMVIThe two zeros tell us that there are no hundreds and no tens. Roman numerals simply leave those missing values out.

Zero digits and the number zero are different
A zero digit inside a modern number is not the same as the number zero on its own.
Take 2,006:
2,006 = MMVIIn our decimal system, the zeros hold the hundreds and tens positions open. Without them, 2,006 would become 26.
Roman numerals do not work through fixed columns in the same way. They record the values that are present:
MM = 2,000
VI = 6
MMVI = 2,006There is no need to add anything for the missing hundreds or tens.
The same idea appears in smaller numbers:
20 = XX
105 = CV
1,009 = MIXRoman numerals simply omit any value group that is not needed.
Why do Roman numerals not need placeholder zeros?
Our usual decimal numerals are positional. The value of a digit depends on where it appears.
For example, the 2 in these numbers has a different value each time:

2,000A zero is needed to keep an empty position open.
Roman numerals work differently. A symbol keeps its value wherever it appears:
X = 10
C = 100
M = 1,000Because the system is not positional, it does not require a placeholder zero. An absent value can simply be left out.
Is there a Roman numeral for zero?

The seven standard Roman numeral symbols are:
I, V, X, L, C, D, MAll seven represent positive values. None represents zero.
This does not mean that Roman or medieval writers could not describe an empty amount. They could use ordinary words meaning “none” or “nothing.”
The difference is between:
- understanding that nothing is present;
- having a numeral symbol for zero;
- using zero as a placeholder;
- treating zero as a number in calculations.
The clearest modern answer is:
There is no standard Roman numeral for zero.
Were words used for a zero value?
Yes, in some later calculation tables.
Medieval scholars who calculated the date of Easter worked with values that could sometimes be zero. Bede’s discussion of lunar epacts describes an epact of zero, while Latin wording derived from nullus—meaning none—was used in this computistical tradition.
This was a specialised way of recording that no value was present. It did not add another symbol to the standard Roman numeral system.
For ordinary modern conversion, zero therefore remains outside the seven Roman numeral symbols.
Can Roman numerals represent negative numbers?
Not in the ordinary traditional system.
A modern writer can place a minus sign before a Roman numeral:
−V = −5
−X = −10
−XXV = −25Most readers will understand the intended value. However, the minus sign is doing the work of making the number negative.
The Roman numeral itself still represents a positive value:
V = 5
−V = a modern minus sign applied to VIt is therefore more accurate to call −V a modern hybrid than a traditional Roman numeral form.
For an ordinary Roman numeral conversion, the supported value should remain positive.
Can Roman numerals contain decimals?
Roman numerals do not have a standard decimal-point system.
A form such as:
II.5may be understandable to a modern reader, but it mixes two systems:
- II is a Roman numeral;
- the decimal point and 5 belong to modern decimal notation.
It is not a complete traditional Roman numeral.
The same problem applies to an invented form such as:
II.VThere is no standard rule saying that V after a point means five tenths. Roman numeral symbols do not work as decimal digits.
The Unicode Standard describes Roman numerals as suitable for positive-integer writing rather than direct decimal representation.
Did Romans use fractions?
Yes. The lack of Roman decimals did not prevent people from expressing parts of a whole.
Roman fractional practice was often based on twelfths rather than tenths. The uncia represented one twelfth, while other named units and signs represented additional fractions.
That is different from placing a modern decimal point after Roman numeral letters.

Is there a year zero?

The sequence moves directly from:

This is a calendar-numbering convention, not a Roman numeral rule.
